Rediscovering Hope in the Signs of the Times: First Meeting

Thursday, March 27, as part of the Jubilee training program, Caritas Diocesana Trieste is organizing a Round Table on the theme "The social distress of minors and adolescents: the weakest link in an imminent future.”
Speakers:
Aldo Raoul Becce, Psychotherapist and Psychoanalyst, member of Jonas Trieste
Giorgia D’Errico, Director of Institutional Relations at Save the Children Italy
Carla Garlatti, former Authority for Children and Adolescents
Today in Italy, one in four minors lives in poverty (Istat data). This figure has reached a historic high, with 13.8% of the country’s minors—equivalent to 1.295 million children and adolescents—affected. Families with children are the poorest: they make up 34% of those living in absolute poverty. Economic, educational, and social deprivation significantly impact the lives of minors and their families.
Starting from the fragility of the younger generations, reflections, and expert experiences, Caritas Diocesana Trieste calls on the local community and organizes a Round Table titled "The social distress of minors and adolescents: the weakest link in an imminent future," scheduled for Thursday, March 27, at 5:30 PM at the Serbian Orthodox Hall, Via Genova 12.
Speakers include Aldo Raoul Becce, Psychotherapist and Psychoanalyst, member of Jonas Trieste; Giorgia D’Errico, Director of Institutional Relations at Save the Children Italy; and Carla Garlatti, former Authority for Children and Adolescents.
"We have chosen to focus the debate on child and adolescent poverty, which is increasingly affecting our region," explains Father Giovanni La Manna, Director of Caritas Diocesana Trieste. "This poverty is not just economic but also relational, educational, and social. The fragility of young people reflects the fragility of families and society, which fails to support and accompany them. What worries us the most is the impact this will have on the near future of our community."
The Round Table is part of the Jubilee training program titled "Rediscovering Hope in the Signs of the Times," aimed at Caritas volunteers, parish volunteers, and the entire community. The program is inspired by Pope Francis’s Bull of Indiction for the 2025 Jubilee, Spes non confundit, and addresses poverty not only as a phenomenon but also by emphasizing the promotion of human dignity, the construction of the common good, and civic participation.
Pope Francis, in fact, invites us to "find signs of hope in the signs of the times," and this is the focus of the meetings: starting from reflections and experiences on a phenomenon to build the future—a sign of a community that informs itself and, if it wishes, takes action.
